Willem de Kooning is famous for his explorations of abstraction, although he usually referred to recognizable subject matter (so not pure abstraction). Many many times, he came back to the figure, "Woman," especially. This painting is one of his "Woman" paintings, much gentler and softer in color and form than some of his more famous ones. I love the light, the courage to leave the centre of the canvas white, the spring colors...I have had this image on my desktop for a few weeks now, reminding me that spring WILL come...This painting has even fuelled more work on a giant canvas of my own, which tends to sit untended in my sunny-but-cold studio in these days of graphic design busyness. Sometimes, there are little fragments of time for the painter, and more often, simply inspired imaginings. It is good to have a head full of painterly thoughts.
